It often seems the case that ensembles have a fantastic, often under-challenged, keyboard percussionist. In fact, at my university, we had 2! I always noted that the excerpts they were working on in the practice room were much harder than anything they were given to play during the performance with the ensemble itself.

Noting how much of an injustice this seemed, I decided to write this piece, which features a soloist on the xylophone and a second soloist on the marimba. These parts are quite challenging for both the soloists and worthy of their talents. Even though I hadn’t planned it ahead of time, at times, you may hear the work journeying into Japanese or Soviet musical styles.
