Preludes For Piano #1-5 (2018)
Instrumentation: Solo Piano
Approx. Running Time: 21:00
The Five Preludes draw on Russian and Parisian influences from the beginning of the 20th Century, sometimes combined with modern concepts of harmony and sometimes not.
Similar to the sonata and piano concerto, the preludes often employ tonal cluster voicings where the melody note is closely supported by neighboring tones. In general, the preludes are lighter in substance, more akin to a spread of finger sandwiches than a hearty meal.
Prelude No. 3 is the most unique member of the set, especially in terms of pianistic technical challenges. While the other four are comfortable for the most part, No. 3 features some widely voiced chords played at high dynamics and should be practiced and performed with caution.
Prelude No. 5 is very Bach-ish in shape and appearance but is spoken in a much vaguer harmonic language. This prelude benefits from using sparse pedaling in the areas that are possible to sustain with only the fingers.
