Osen translates to “autumn” in Russian, and the work opens to the sound of falling leaves played by the flutes. The wind instruments dominate the opening section, giving the work an inherently wooden tone.
Spacious and shy at first, the piece slowly grows into a full bodied work before climaxing with the brass in the closing statement.
The harmonic language is very accessible, with touches of classicism spread over a mostly cinematic influence. Composed specifically for symphonic band, this work should easily adapt to any size ensemble with any coverages.
