The concerto opens to a joint A minor harmony in the clarinets and A major in the bassoons.  The piano continues this concept with the right hand playing in A minor and the left in A major. Presented as consonance, this contrasting dual-tonic proves to be the central harmonic point for the rest of the work and is explored thoroughly in all movements.

Strongly suggestive of the late neo-classical period, the concerto seems to also combine elements of romanticism with hints of the classical era (2nd Movement).

The concerto frequently matches traditional elements against disparate accompaniments. Oftentimes, one of the two wins the struggle and the composer follows with some unpaired bars of the winner senza the loser.

The piano cadenza which opens the second movement features instruction from the composer to “give equal weight to dissonant notes.”   These democratically voiced tonal clusters present prominently in the later parts of the second and third movements.
