Boomba (2015)
Instrumentation: Level 5 Wind Ensemble
Approx. Running Time: 4:30
Boomba is a playful but moderately difficult composition with jazz and cinematic influences–it has been a fan favorite at concerts.
This piece was composed rather quickly, totaling about two days, because I needed a “filler” piece to record with Endeavor. I started quickly writing it, not taking it very seriously, and just let it go in whichever direction it wished. It was a very Bob Ross-like experience. At the center of the piece is a silly motif in the timpani, which sounds like someone playing bongos, as well as some quirky horn lines. I encourage the performers to shape the piece in whichever direction they wish – a little bit of improvisation here or phrasing there will suit the piece just fine. If there are extra percussionists available, they can grab whatever and groove on it for the active parts.
I was informed after the session that Eb Clarinet is a rarity (why? it’s so cool and handy), so I’ve provided a few options for the “soloist” part.
